In the inaugural season of the GT4 European Cup five meetings were held as support races
to the FIA GT series. The newly developped format can be perceived as the entry level
into GT racing. The technical concept is identical to the balance of performance system that
is being successfully applied in the GT3 class. This allows different car concepts from front
to rear and mid engined cars to compete against each other on an evenly matched basis.
The main emphasis of the GT4 class lies on reduced running costs. This has been achieved
by homologating roadgoing production Gt cars with only a limited amount of race preparation
to keep the racing affordable. Engine and drivetrain for example are exactly the same as in
the production cars. The list of changes compared to the production cars is relatively short
with a rollcage, fire extinguisher, safety fuel tank and lightweight side windows being the
only real differences. In its debut season the European GT4 Cup held 5 events with two races
each at Silverstone, Oschersleben, Spa, Nogaro and Magny Cours. The 2008 season will see
an extension of the calendar to 6 race meetings.
